Now today I want to talk about something folks ask me all the time, and that's how you know when your air ducts actually need cleaning. Because here's the thing, most people never think about their ducts at all, they're just out of sight, out of mind. But those ducts are moving the air your whole family breathes, and when they're dirty, you feel it whether you know why or not.
So let me walk you through some of the signs, because this stuff matters. The first one I tell everybody, and it's the easiest, just go look at your vent covers. If you're seeing dust caked up around the registers, or little black streaks around the edges of the vents, that's your ductwork telling on itself.
Another big one is dust. If you feel like you're dusting your furniture every single day, and it just keeps coming back no matter what you do, that dust is coming from somewhere. A lot of times it's blowing right out of your ducts every time that system kicks on.
Then there's allergies, and this one hits close to home for a lot of families. If somebody in the house is sneezing, coughing, waking up stuffed up, and you can't figure out why, it may not be the season at all. It might be the pollen, the pet dander, and all that gunk sitting in your ducts getting stirred up and blown right back at you.
Smell is another one people don't think about. If you turn your system on and there's a musty, stale odor coming through the vents, that's not normal. That can mean moisture got in there, and once you've got moisture and dust together, well, that's a recipe for mold, and mold is nothing to mess around with.
I remember going out to a home, sweet older lady, and she kept telling me the house just never smelled fresh no matter how much she cleaned. We pulled that system apart and, I'll be honest with you, it was rough in there. We got it done right, and when she called me back she said the whole house felt different, and that right there is why I love this work.
Now here's another sign, and this one costs you money. If your energy bill keeps creeping up and your system's running longer and longer just to keep up, dirty ducts could be part of it. When those ducts are packed with debris, your air handler's got to work twice as hard to push air through, and you're paying for every bit of that.
You can also just watch how your air feels. If some rooms never seem to get cool or warm like the rest of the house, or the airflow out of certain vents feels weak, there's a good chance something's building up in there. Air takes the path of least resistance, and if it's blocked, you'll feel it.
And let me say this plain, if you've had recent construction, or a remodel, or you just moved into a home and don't know its history, get those ducts looked at. All that drywall dust and sawdust and whatever the last folks left behind, it settles right down in there and waits for you.
Now here's the honest part, because I always aim to shoot straight with folks. Air duct cleaning done right isn't the cheapest thing in the world, and I've had people tell me they think I'm high on price.
