Hey y'all, I'm Jordan Brush with Prime Cleaning and Restoration right here in Tyler, Texas. This isn't really my business, it's God's business, and I'm just doing my best to run it right, treat folks the way they deserve, and set a standard for what quality's supposed to look like. So today I wanna talk about something I know a little about from the inside, and that's what to do when your company starts layoffs. I spent about ten years working offshore for a big deepwater drilling company, a Fortune 500 outfit, and then one day I got laid off. I know exactly what that gut punch feels like, so this one's personal for me.
First thing I'll tell you is this, don't panic and don't let it steal who you are. A layoff is a paycheck ending, it is not a verdict on your worth as a man or a woman. I had to remind myself of that when I came home, because when the work stops it's real easy to start doubting yourself.
The second thing I did, and I mean the very first real thing, is I prayed on it hard. I sat with it and I asked the good Lord what was next, because I honestly didn't know. Now maybe faith looks different for you, but you need somebody or something bigger than your fear to lean into when the ground shakes.
Then you gotta get honest about your money real quick. Look at what's coming in, look at what's going out, and cut anything that isn't keeping a roof over your head or food on the table. Nobody likes doing that, but a clear picture of your bills beats a scary guess every single time.
Here's a piece a lot of folks skip, lean on your people and don't hide it out of pride. My wife and my family stood beside me through all of it, and I promise you I couldn't have built a thing without them. There's no shame in telling the people who love you the truth, that's what they're there for.
Now I want you to keep your eyes open, because sometimes the door that closes is pointing you at one you'd never have looked at. A guy mentioned carpet cleaning to me and I flat out said no, there's no money in that. But I took that little idea, I worked it, I grew it, I learned it, and I kept adding to it until it became something real.
The way I see it now, God had a plan for me to come home, be with my family, and build this. That layoff felt like the worst thing at the time, and it turned out to be the doorway to the best thing. So when you're staring at that closed door, don't assume the story's over, sometimes it's just getting started.
I'll tell you the mindset that carried me, there's no option for failure, I won't quit, that's not how it works. When you've got mouths to feed, quitting just isn't on the menu, so you get up and you work your tail off. Blood, sweat, and tears, that's what building something honest actually costs.
And through all of it, remember what you really own, which is your word and your name. Don't burn a bridge on your way out, don't badmouth the company that let you go, keep your integrity clean. Because the next opportunity is gonna come from somebody who trusts your name, and that reputation is the one thing nobody can lay off.
One more thing before I let you go, take care of the man in the mirror too. I'm the boss now, and I take account of my people and how they're doing on any given day, because I know a hard season wears on you. So give yourself a little grace, get some rest, hug your kids, and take it one day at a time.
